A’s & Aces is recruiting after-school volunteers to assist K-4th grade public school children with reading, homework and/or tennis.
We use the USTA’s QuickStart Tennis programming (portable short courts with small rackets and large foam balls) on the elementary school playgrounds. The model varies according to each school’s situation, but usually we rotate the groups after about 45 minutes with half of the children having tennis instruction and the other half receiving academic assistance.
We have volunteer opportunities to work with our staff at one of the following schools each weekday; tentative locations and times are:
• Arthur Ashe Charter (401 Nashville Ave.); M/W, 3:30-5:00
• Milestone Sabis Academy (5951 Patton St., at State St.); F, 3:30-5:30
• Lafayette Academy Charter ( 2727 S. Carrollton Ave., at Walmsley Ave.); T, Th 10:15-11:00AM
• Edward Hynes Charter (3774 Gentilly Boulevard); T, 3:15-4:30
• Langston Hughes Academy Charter (3419 Trafalgar St.); M, T, W, Th, 3:30-4:30
Enthusiasm is required, but training will be provided so no tennis/tutoring experience is necessary. Adults, retirees, college and mature high school students are welcome; students can earn required community service hours through this program.
